Steak and Chips was yesterday (Weds) voted the greatest pub grub meal of all time.

The classic British staple came top of a poll of 3,000 adults followed by Roast Beef and all the trimmings.

Fish and Chips came third, with Cheeseburger and Chips and Lasagne completing the top five.

A spokesman for Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer, which carried out the research, said: ''In a time when fusion cooking and exotic cultural dishes are becoming more and more popular, it's great to see old British classics still coming out on top as everyone's favourites.

''It seems we still love tucking into a juicy steak or traditional roast dinner.

''And with the summer approaching, enjoying a bit of pub grub in a sunny beer garden is going to be a popular activity, so it looks like steak will be the meal on everyone's plates.''

Sixth place in the poll went to Bangers and Mash, smothered in onion gravy, with Chicken Curry only coming in at seven.

Chilli Con Carne was voted into eighth place while Shepherd's Pie and Spaghetti Bolognaise completed the top ten.

Researchers also found more than a third of Brits said classic home-cooked meals were their favourite type of food followed by a traditional roast dinner.

And almost three quarters feel nostalgic about the food they had as a child, with Fish Fingers and Chips, Mum's roast dinner and Beans on Toast coming out on top.

Seventy three per cent said they look forward to going home to Mum to enjoy some of her home cooking and forty nine per cent say the same about going to their Gran's house.

Meanwhile, four in ten even ask their Mum or Gran to make their favourite childhood meal whenever they go to see them, with three quarters revealing that eating their favourite childhood meal can help to cheer them up when they are feeling down.

Almost two thirds of people have tried to recreate the meals cooked for them when they were younger - but just a quarter say they actually manage to get it right.
