SCENT OF A CITY

London was yesterday (Mon) voted the worst-smelling city Britain.

The stench of car fumes, overflowing bins and public toilets were cited as major reasons for the capital coming in first place in the hall of shame.

Other unpleasant whiffs include stinking drains, body odour and cigarette smoke.

The study of 3,000 adults from around the British Isles placed Birmingham in second place and Coventry in third.

Swansea and Glasgow completed the top five.

Eight out of ten people blamed those who live in the big cities for the bad smells and urged them to do more to keep their streets clean.

Catherine Fairchild from Flash with Febreze, which carried out the study, said: ''London may be a vibrant, bustling capital, but the sheer amount of people living there seems to have a huge effect on its smell.

''Many people aren't happy with the smell of their cities and it seems nasty niffs can really get us down.

''People seem to agree that a nicer, fresh smell makes them feel happy, and that includes inside their own home.

''So when you live in a less than fragrant city, it's even more important to make sure your home is clean and smelling the best it can be so you have somewhere comfortable and welcoming to come home to at the end of the day.''

Belfast was named the nicest-smelling city, with Exeter second and Plymouth third.

The university haven of Cambridge was fourth while surprisingly Southampton was fifth.

Favourite smells for those who were polled were the scent of clean flowers, freshly mown grass and clean sheets.

Lavender and lemon zest also made the list.

Two thirds of the adults questioned said it was important to have a nice smelling home, with just over half always making sure it had a nice scent when they were expecting guests.
