FILLER THRILLER

The classic BLT was yesterday (Fri) named the nation's favourite sandwich.

The combination of smoky bacon, crunchy lettuce and juicy tomato scooped the top spot ahead of the quintessentially English high tea filling - egg and cress.

Third in sandwich stakes was the meaty filling of chicken and bacon.

A spokesman for www.onepoll.com said: ''Despite fancier sandwich varieties hitting our shelves, the classic BLT is still Brits' favourite filling.

''The mouth-watering flavours of crispy bacon, lettuce and tomato never tires and it's good to see another classic, egg and cress, coming second.

''Sandwiches are such a staple lunchtime dish and getting the right filling is so important. People seem to have very particular views on what makes or breaks their ultimate sarnie.''

Fourth in the poll of 5,000 Brits was the healthy seafood combo of prawns and salad followed by Ploughman's - comprising cheddar, pickle and lettuce.

Fishy family favourite Tuna and sweetcorn came seventh, with ham and salad in eighth place.

Ham and salad followed, with the English breakfast inspired filling of egg and bacon completing the top ten.
